I was hit by red when I was very young
Decided then and there this would be the colour of fun
I started collecting reds – stuck them carefully in my mind
I wanted to remember each one in time
Now the time has come
2
Red is everywhere
It starts words
Ends them
Makes them start again
We need to be friends with red
4
Red is heat
When her face turns red
It may be embarrassment
The heat of the moment – or just the heat
When her face turns red
I must pause, judge and smile
A smile always helps red
6
Artists are usually scared of excess red
Good for highlights
Spots and flashes
But too much red
A dress, a cloak, a bed cover
Could also be fire
8
Red is everywhere
The warmth in the eyes
Can, with breeze,
Be fanned into fire
Feared and desired
You have been warned
10
A red thread
Hides all others
Like blood in a vein
It is the life of the leaf
It is the birth
The source
Only then can green flow
12
A red rose frozen
When clutched to the heart
Is melted
Could be that the red is weak
But the heart is strong
Can melt a frozen red rose
14
Green is nice when walking in the park
Blue is soft and blends in well
Brown is natural, expected
Greys, whites and blacks are rare
But red…now I have to look
To know why
16
The red leaf
A study
Find an appropriate tree
Place your seat next to the branch
Make sure your drink is steaming warm
And stare at the leaf
You will see Nature
And Nature is God
18
I was once talking to this bush
About the weather
And the effect it has on colour
The sun the breeze the clouds
And the rain
Each has a pallette
But only the sun paints red
20
But first, she said
You must cross the Land of Red
To which the dragons fled
Where devils are bred
And fire rests its raging head
Swim fly run persevere
And you will reach the light
22
I started counting
One two three
The poppy field
And me
I continued counting
Eight nine ten
I saw only red
The poppy field
And me
24
How come you’re so red?
I asked the bloom
You’re the most beautiful red
In the room
I’m not red he said
You must be blind
I’m the bluest bloom
Of the very blue kind
26
I looked closer at the bloom
Still saw only red
Look with your heart
He said
My heart was sad
From the ache we’d been through
I now looked at the red
And saw blue
28
Look at this flower
The red colour is clear
But look at it
Bring it near
The angles the twists
The forms and the shapes
Not only an artist
But a sculptor is here
30
Put red against blue
As I often do
A contrast of light
Peering through
That’s when red becomes redder
And blue bluer
See the colours
So true
32
Balloons
Cherries
Bubbles
Berries
Gathered together
Tightly tethered
Like sheep
Red ones
34
It was a chance meeting
I had lost my way
No clear route to follow
That miserable day
A red flower appeared
Guided me home
Touched him before I left
I didn’t want to be alone
36
So there I was
Riding my bike
Listening to Beethoven
Thinking of Van Dyke
When along came this balcony
Covered in red
I need you up here
It said
38
Ever met a crowd of red
Each one wearing the same
Same hues
Same values
Communisame
40
Identical twins
That’s what we were when we arrived
But Nature has a way
Of treating us individually
And we too choose our own ways
We do still talk
Spend time together
We shall always hold hands
42
You think it’s easy being me?
Left hanging on this tree
For all eyes to see
Pretty pretty me
Well it is, you see
It is easy being me
Told constantly how lovely
Having red all around me
44
Nobody knows
That blood when it flows
From a dahlia’s nose
Spreads warmth from edges of petals
To tips of toes
The blossom glows
Red as the heart that shows
How much I love you
46
Still life makes life stand still
And with it time
So that the eyes can have their fill
Here whether sunset or rise
It’s the red that fills the eyes
And it’s only the dream that flies
While all else stands still – or dies
48
Hello
Hello
Do I know you
Not that I know
We look so alike
But something’s not true
We have the same value
But a totally different hue
50
Built a bed of straw
And covered it with more
Then a plate of red
Strawberries red
Plucked fresh from the plant
A bushel of red
Straw and berries
