In March 2020 New York City went into lockdown due to COVID-19.  My high school closed down and went into remote learning.  This picture book consists of photos I took during the past year.  Reflecting a sense of isolation and separation from my friends.

The Monster in Frankenstein was brought into the world by a psychotic scientist.  With no family, roots, home he questioned his existence and went into isolation.

During COVID-19 people who lived alone or with their family suddenly found themselves isolated from their community.  If they were sick, they were unable to make contact with family members even in their own homes.

Living in the new COVID normal is unsettling.  With no end in sight it feels apocalyptic.  The Monster never felt a part of a new normal.  He didn’t have any frame of reference for why he was alive.  The longer he was isolated, rejected and alone, the lonelier he felt.

COVID is the hidden monster bringing out the worst and best in humanity.  For those already experiencing depression, the feeling of hopelessness became more intense.

My Citizen app gives updates hourly on the increased violence in the city.  I’ve never seen so many violent incidents and it has gotten worse as the pandemic continues.  People feeling angry and helpless due to loneliness and isolation.
