Round the world in eighty days

Jules verne

Genre : adventure

The story begins on October 2, 1872. Phileas Fogg, a solitary and wealthy bachelor with regular habits, fires his personal servant. He hires the services of a new servant named Passepartout. Later that day, during his daily visit to the Reform Club (Club of Reform), club members talk about the grand theft of a whopping fifty-five thousand pounds from the Bank of England.

In the reform club a debate arose as to whether the thief could not be caught. One participant noted that after the railroad across the Indian Peninsula was completed, an article was published in the Daily Telegraph stating that eighty days was enough to circumnavigate the globe. Fogg, who did not take part in the debate, comments that this is possible. His friends are betting with him on £ 20,000 [and Fogg sets out and draws the same amount to cover travel expenses.
