Lyrics:
I was born by the river in a little tent,Oh, and just like the
river I’ve been running ever since. It’s been a long, a long
time coming, But I know a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.
It’s been too hard living, but I’m afraid to die
‘Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky.
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will
I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don’t hang around.
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will
Then I go to my brother
And I say, “Brother, help me please”
But he winds up knockin’ me
Back down on my knees.
There’ve been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will
Samuel Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
He is commonly referred to as the “King Of Soul”.
Born in Missisippy and raised in chicago.
Since he was a young child music was in his heart and he joined the Soul Stirrers as lead singer in 1950s.
Going solo in 1957, Cooke released a string of hit songs, including:

In 1964, Cooke was murdered by the manager of the motel in Los Angeles by a gun shot wound that pierced his heart.
The courts ruled Cooke’s death to be a justifiable homicide, his family has since questioned the circumstances of his death.
He was also a central part of the Civil Right Movment, using his influence and popularity with the white and Black population to fight for the cause.
He was good friends with boxer Muhammad Ali, activist Malcolm X and football player Jim Brown, who together campaigned for racial equality.
Back to the song…
“A Change Is Gonna Come” was written most likely after Cooke and his entourage were turned away from a whites only motel in Louisiana.
The song is widely considered Cooke’s best composition and has been voted among the best songs ever released by various publications.
Each verse is a different movement, with the horns carrying the first, the strings the second, and the timpani carrying the bridge.
I want to share here with you my favorite cover of the song by “Greta Van Fleet”.
Even though 53 years past, the lyrics are still crying as hard as they can for a change which very sadly didn’t come…
