  1. There were five sisters in the family, and the Little Mermaid was the youngest one. I think she felt lonely because her sisters were old enough to swim to the outside world, and she stayed at home playing in the garden with her friends – sea creatures. She was curious about the life described by her sisters after they returned from the world of humans and asked them many questions about that place. The sisters felt that they needed to teach Sirenetta everything they knew and help her easily adapt to the outside world. Sirenetta was probably not mature enough to understand this, but I am sure like in any other families, the sisters loved and respected each other.
  2. The Little Mermaid’s father, the triton, was very wise and had a long beard. He was named the Sea King. He was caring, intelligent, and kind. The father loved his five daughters, giving them permission to leave the sea bottom and go to the humans’ world. He also warned his children to stay away from people and their world since sea creatures had no soul. His love and tenderness toward his daughters were endless. He took good care of them, teaching them to be polite, obedient, and creative.
  3. The Little Mermaid sacrificed her life to give the Prince a chance to continue living because she had feelings for him. Even though her love was undivided, she felt that his life was the main priority, and she wanted to give everything to him. I suppose Sirenetta saw the connection between the Prince and the bride and wanted him to be happy even with another girl. She could not kill someone precious to her because her life would have become a torture. She knew there was no chance to return to her daily life, but the Heaven is always open to creatures with pure hearts. To my mind, Andersen created such ending to show the results of the impetuous actions of the emotional teenager who did not understand that her irresponsibility would bring problems to her family. Her actions were selfish since she did not ask her parents for permission or a piece of advice. Even having a desire to feel and experience new and exciting life, she needed to count on her family. If the author had created a happy ending, young girls would see that they could act impetuously without being punished. Therefore, Andersen created a sad ending to warn them that all actions have consequences. Moreover, the Little Mermaid changed herself for someone different from her. However, in fact, her sacrifice was in vain. People love each other for who they are, so there is no need to make changes. It is another message Andersen wanted to deliver to his readers.
  4. In case the Prince sacrificed his life for Sirenetta’s well-being, the girl would return to her home and family. The sisters and parents would be happy to see her again. The Sea King would say that even though she had done a bad thing and had not listened to him, he would forgive his little daughter. Sirenetta would live with the burden of the Prince’s death. While swimming and playing with her sisters, she would feel guilty because now they do not have hair. She would stop singing and ask questions about the humans’ world. The Little Mermaid would be always sad and unable to feel love, joy, and pleasure. The fairytale would have an unhappy ending again as Sirenetta would commit suicide or die because of another Witch’s spell.
