Zaanse Schans
Zaanse Schans, famous for its windmills, is one of the most touristic towns in the Netherlands. Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum consisting of 13 active windmills under protection and 35 historical houses that were moved here in 1960. While there were 1,000 windmills in this region at the time, this number decreased to 50 in 1920, and 13 active mills have survived to the present day.

The most famous of the Windmills is De Kat (meaning cat). De Kat is a windmill built in 1782, whose function is to produce color for dyes. We chose to visit this windmill. The entrance fee is 4€.There are tiny cheese factories, where you can watch and buy cheese production. There is also a shoe workshop in Zaanse Schans. Here you can watch and buy shoes and take pictures with the giant shoes in front of the workshop.

You can reach Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam Centraal Station by train or bus. The journey by train takes about 15 minutes, but since the stop is outside the center, there is a 20-minute walk. The journey by bus takes about 40 minutes, but there is no need to walk as the stop is in the center. You can go to the top floor of the station by bus number 391 from platform E, with a round trip bus ticket for 10€ per person from the EBS office in Entraal.
