To my fellow educators:
As our students begin to grow up, they go through their own metamorphosis. Martha’s life cycle will show students how an egg develops into a beautiful butterfly just as they do throughout these years.
This book includes a vocabulary page, discussion questions and answers, and quizlet.
Lesson Objective:
After this lesson students will be able to:
-
Understand the four stages of Martha’s butterfly life cycle
-
Identify key words used when talking about Martha’s butterfly life cycle
-
Arrange the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle in the correct order
One day a monarch butterfly flew to a milkweed tree and landed on a leaf. The monarch laid an egg and flew away.

After a few days, the caterpillar ate their way through the egg! Her name was Martha and she was so excited to be out of there!
“That space was small!” she yelled out.

Martha was very hungry so she began to ate the leaf she was born on! She kept eating and eating…
“Yummy! That leaf was so good!” she exclaimed!

As she kept eating…she kept growing and growing and growing!
“I am getting so big” she said.

Martha eventually could not eat anymore and decided to go to another milkweed tree and hung upside down and began to form into a chrysalis.
“Bye everyone!” Martha yelled out to all the other insects.

Martha laid in her pupa for about four weeks and did not say a word. During this tie, she was going through metamorphosis.

Metamorphosis is when the body begins to mature. Martha’s caterpillar body begins to transform into a butterfly body. This means she will begin to form antennas, wings and legs.

Martha has finally finished her process of becoming a beautiful butterfly and emerges out her chrysalis. It takes her a few hours until her soft wings harden for her to be able to fly.
“FINALLY FREE!” Martha shouts.

Martha has four wings which are covered in a beautiful orange and black pattern. She flies to a flower for their sweet nectar to drink. She has reached her final stage of her life cycle and could not be happier!
“Now to start my life!”

After reading all about Martha’s life, let’s take a closer look!
