To Educators,

This 5th grade class is very interested and enthusiastic to learn. It is important to provide information about germs so that students will know what to do to prevent germs as well as why they are harmful. This is very critical for students to recognize while in the classroom and environment.

Magic Glitter Experiment!

  • For this experiment student must have a plate, dish soap, glitter and cotton swaps.
  • They will fill the plate with water just until it doesn’t overflow, then fill their cup with dish soap, they will then sprinkle some glitter (if they do not have glitter then pepper) over the water so it is covering the top.
  • First students will dip their finger in glittery water without dish soap and observe what happens. The students will dip their finger (or cotton swap if they do not want to touch soap) in dish soap.
  • They will observe what happens when you dip your finger in dish soap then in the glittery water.
  • Fill out the experiment worksheet as they go through it.

  • What did you observe in the experiment?
  • Why do you think the glitter spread out when your finger with dish soap was placed in water?
  • When soap is put in water all the glitter separates because the bonds of the glitter are broken after the soap touches it. The soap breaks the surface tension of water.

Washing Hand Activity:

  • Students will be lined up in front of the classroom sink.
  • Teacher will then put a drop of washable paint in each students hand.
  • Students will be asked to spread the paint all over their hands, in between their fingers etc so the paint is covering their hands.
  • They then will be have to wash their hands using soap to get all of the paint off of their hands.
  • It is so important to wash every part of your hand and not just the palm and students should wash their hands for atleast 20 seconds.
  • Students must take the time to wash their hands to get rid of germs.
