Like many of you, I suffer from gastric (acid) reflux. This is because I have no peristalsis of my esophagus (achalasia). These are my personal recommendations (please keep in mind that I am a microbiologist, a Ph.D., not a real medical doctor).

2

Tip One

Avoid overeating, especially in the evening. Try to eat a small dinner four hours before you go to sleep.

3

Tip Two

Don’t constrict your waist by wearing tight-fitting clothes or a tight belt.

I avoid tightening my waist by wearing suspenders and loose-fitting clothing.

4

Tip Three

Keep your head and esophagus slightly raised when you sleep.

I use four pillows or five pillows (I know that’s a lot but it’s a life saver).

5

Tip Four

Drink as little coffee and alcohol as you can (I know, this is difficult. One of the tips I have trouble following myself).

6

Tip Five

Try to avoid medication or use the minimum medication you need. Remember that pills tend to have side effects.

7

Tip Six

Figure out which foods cause you reflux and avoid them. This is a personal thing. You can check to see how you are affected by fried foods, tomatoes, etc. and avoid those foods that give you heartburn. Some people find that chocolate gives them heartburn. Check it as well.

8

Tip Seven

Figure out which particular foods help you when you do have reflux. I find that bread and yogurt help me when washed down with some cold water. Again, it’s personal, so do your research.

9

Tip Eight

Many people don’t drink enough water.

Make sure you do.

10

Tip Nine

Reduce your stress level. Whatever makes you less nervous and jittery.

11

Tip Ten

Check your esophagus checked once in a while to make sure that everything is in order.
