Origins

The metric system started in France as a result of the 1789 French revolution.

The metric system was born by the Academy of Sciences, a council that reformed measurement for the rest of history.

Prior to this, every country had its own system of measurement.

Why It Matters

The metric system has helped to standardize measurement worldwide.

This helps with all areas of life especially science, math, medicine, technology, government, education, and communication.

The Metric System Today

Today, the U.S. is one of only 3 countries in the world to not fully adopt the metric system. The other two are Myanmar and Liberia.

However, the metric system is used universally, regardless of the country, in science and medicine.

As technology improves, so does the metric system.
