Although today the Christmas tree is considered a Christian custom, it actually originated in ancient times. In Ancient Egypt they decorated palm trees. Germanic tribes later decorated evergreen boughs to celebrate the gift of light around the shortest day of the year, December 21st. In the beginning, people only decorated branches from firs, firs, and pines, and only in 1597 they began to decorate a whole tree. Evergreen trees symbolize eternal life. They are among the most significant parts of the holiday ritual. Gradually, the Christmas tree decorations become richer; Christmas trees are decorated with garlands, lots of lights and Christmas toys.

It is among the most common traditions associated with the celebration of the Nativity of Christ. It is a decoration of an evergreen coniferous tree – most often of the fir genus, from which the name comes. Before Christmas, the tree is cut down, brought into the home and decorated with colorful lights, ornaments and treats. In some cases, large street trees in strategic places are decorated without being cut down. Also, in some cases artificial trees are used instead of live trees.

The prototype of the good old man can be found in the person of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, born and lived in the III-IV centuries in the Roman province of Lycia, located on the territory of today’s Turkey. He became a bishop very young. He appears as a noble and generous person, deeply believing and devoted to the Christian religion. He donates all his wealth to the poor and the oppressed. In memory of his generosity, the tradition of people exchanging gifts remains.

According to the legend, Santa Claus lives at the North Pole or in Lapland together with elves or gnomes who help him make the presents for the children. Every year he brings gifts to the obedient children using a magical flying sleigh pulled by the reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph. In various fairy tales and films, the characters Santa Claus (Santa Claus’s wife) and Snow White (his helper) are also found.
