Ahmed Rami & Umm Kulthum- A one sided love story

Introduction

Ahmed Rami, a famous Egyptian poet, fell in love with Umm Kulthum when he was a young child. This love created a one-sided love in the history of tragic love stories.

Both important figures spent time together, from singing to watching the Nile River every week, to writing music lyrics. However, both knew they could not be together. 

Who Was Ahmad Rami?

Ahmad Rami was born in 1892, in Cairo, Egypt. He spent his early childhood in Egypt, but moved to Paris, France to study document systems, libraries, and oriental languages. During his life, he won numerous medals and awards, including an honorary doctorate degree in arts. Ahmad Rami wrote lyrics for iconic singers such as Umm Kulthum and Mohamed Abdel Wahab.

Rami highly influenced the legendary Egyptian singer, Umm Kulthum. He wrote at least 200 of her songs which she performed.

The love story that gathered Ahmed Rami with umm kolthum, during which he wrote many of the poems sung by Kawkab al-Sharq (umm kulthum), which was the song “Ya Masharni” -“you make me stay awake”, in which he reproached her, because she did’t ask about him for several days during the time he was staying at home, he also wrote Kawkab al-Sharq, “mkhtartesh ala balak youm tesaal aani”-“I didn’t cross your mind to ask about me”. and so many songs that includes emotions.

   The song- “hayart albi maak”- “you have puzzled my heart”

Despite the great love of the poet Ahmed Rami for Umm Kulthum, when he got married, Umm Kulthum gave him a ring, and this ring remained in his hand for 40 years, and her picture remained hanging in his bedroom for 50 years. When she gave the ring he was confused, because he didn’t know if she loves him. so he wrote the song “hayart albi maak” which means “you have puzzled my heart”.

The creative writer behind Umm Kulthum’s music would say that loving her was like loving something untouchable, like the Pyramids. Similarly, he would always feel her love and greatness without intimacy or touch.
