The heart wants what it wants

To break one’s heart: to make someone who loves you very sad, usually by telling that person you have stopped loving them.
Usually used in a romantic context (although sometimes used in any informal conversation among familiar people). The idiom means that a person’s vulnerable heart cannot withstand the bitterness of problem and loss.
The heart wants what it wants: when you want something for emotional reasons, such as when you are romantically or attracted to someone, then no amount of logic or reason can dissuade you.
It is often used in literary works and songs, but can also be heard in spoken language. The idiom has a long history – it was originally a title from a letter by Emily Dickinson. It means that everything that happens between people does not obey logic and people crave it, even if it will destroy their lives.

Kate and John met at the festival and hit it off immediately.
It was love at first sight – Kate fell head over heels. She’d learn by heart everything John was interested in – physics, poetry, technology. But love in paradise wasn’t meant to be forever and one day everything changed.

  She was strolling down the street passing by her and John’s favourite restaurant. Kate didn’t pay much attention until something familiar came into view. She couldn’t believe her eyes at first but obviously it was John. Her boyfriend was at the table kissing another woman. She couldn’t help crying her eyes out. The second she was at home, she called her best friend and poured her heart out.

  Kate broke up with John the next day but he kept apologising and saying that his heart was heavy.

  Some might think that his apologies were from the bottom of his heart but Kate wasn’t so sure about thim anymore.

  He broke her heart and it was not easy to let it go.

  The worst thing is that she didn’t stop loving him – because as the saying goes – the heart wants what it wants.
