“Hopelessly Devoted to You” is a song recorded by Olivia Newton-John for Grease: The Original Soundtrack from the Motion Picture (1978). It was written and produced by John Farrar and originally performed by Newton-John in the film version of the musical Grease (1978).
In this e-book, I will talk about popularity of this song, and explore why this song continues to captivate audiences
(myself included) even in modern times.
First, to get some background, let’s talk a little bit about Grease (although I really hope it won’t be your first time hearing about it):
Grease, American musical film released in 1978 starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta that follows the adventures of a group of high-school students in the late 1950s. Grease is the highest-grossing musical film of the 20th century and is based on, but differs significantly from, the Broadway musical of the same name.

It’s California 1958 and greaser Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Australian Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) are in love. They spend time at the beach, and when they go back to school, what neither of them knows is that they both now attend Rydell High. Danny’s the leader of the T-Birds, a group of black leather jacket-wearing greasers while Sandy hangs with the Pink Ladies, a group of pink-wearing girls led by Rizzo. When they clash at Rydell’s first pep rally, Danny isn’t the same Danny from the beach. They try to be like each other so they can be together.
Our song comes right after a Pink Ladies sleepover scene.
The slumber party is a bit awkward for Sandy. She sits uncomfortably as Rizzo passes around a bottle of wine, and Frenchy teaches her how to properly smoke a cigarette (minutes before piercing her ears).
She steps outside to take a breathe and write a letter to Danny, the summer crush she never thought she’d see again, but she ends up singing instead, looking like a nightingale in a long white gown with a delicate ribbon around her hair. She rips apart each line of “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” with her powerhouse vocals, not missing a beat — even when she sees Danny’s reflection creepily appear in the water.
