Severe Weather Warnings: What to Expect

The Met Office has issued widespread warnings due to:

As a result of these conditions, disruptions to transport services, cancelled events and damaged infrastructure have resulted. Some festivities continued, some were cancelled to keep the public safe.

What has Severe Weather done to Travel?

With heavy rain and strong winds, travel is proving hazardous across the UK and services have been disrupted nationwide.

Key Travel Disruptions:

  • Rail Services: Services in Scotland and Yorkshire have been delayed by speed restrictions and flooding. Inverness to Perth, Kyle of Lochalsh and Edinburgh to Inverness, out of the 39 affected routes, are the main routes included in the strike.
  • Public Transport: Travellers were urged by Transport for Wales, London North Eastern Railway and Translink Northern Ireland to check before travelling.
  • Road Conditions: Roads there are flooded and ice patches have turned driving treacherous.

The idea behind these disturbances is that you should be cautious when travelling through extreme weather.

What is the reason for the Flood Warnings?

Flood warnings include:

  • 67 warnings for England: Central in northern regions.
  • 32 warnings for Scotland: In places prone to river flooding.
  • 10 warnings for Wales: Regions with heavy rainfall are focused on.

Residents warned to stay alert and ready to evacuate in affected areas.

Despite the weather conditions, some of these cities were able to carry out New Year’s Eve celebrations, in a sign of resilience and adaptability.

Highlights of Celebrations:

  • London: The spectacular fireworks over the Thames were seen by thousands braving the weather along the Embankment.
  • Manchester: Safety was kept in mind, while fireworks remained celebratory, by moving them from the central library roof.

But there were concerns for safety and several major events were cancelled, including Edinburgh’s well known Hogmanay celebrations.

Why Did Some Events Get Canceled?

The New Year’s Eve events were canceled because of high winds and unsafe conditions.

Notable Cancellations:

  • Edinburgh: Since Hogmanay street party and fireworks will not be in priority public safety.
  • Blackpool: Other festivities were able to go on, such as projection displays, though fireworks were abandoned.
