the story happens after world war 1 on a ship traveling from san francisco to yokohama in japan.

the story talks about someone called ” max kelada” , he thinks that he know everything and he think that he always right. there are five characters in the story  : mr.kelada, the narrator, the doctor, mr.ramsey and mrs.ramsey.

one evening while mr.kelada, the narrator, the doctor, mr.ramsey and mrs.ramsey were dinning , the conversation drifted to pearls,and there was a bet between mr kelada and mr ramsey  about the chain of mrs.ramsey. mr kelada says that the chain is real and it costs fifteen thousand to thirty thousand dollars, but mrs ramsay said to mr ramsay that she bought it for eighteen dollars.

mr ramsay thinks that he is right and he wants tho show that mr kelada doesnt know everything.

when mr kelada saw the chain, he was certain that the pearls are real and when he looks at mrs ramsay he saw that her face was so white and she was staring at him with wide and terrified eyes. at this moment mr kelada knows that she is lying on evreybody.

the result of the bet was that mr kelada was right , and said to all the pepole on the ship that mrs ramsay lies and the pearls are real and he won the bet. when mr ramsay know that mrs ramsey lies on him he left her and gives mr kelada the hundred dollar because he won the bet and all the people on the ship hate mrs ramsay and liked mr kelada.
