Tom Ripley is an american married to a Frenchwoman and lives in france, Jonathan Trevanny is an Englishman who lives in france too, The first time the two men meet, Tom feels that Jonathan has been unfriendly towards him.
Chapter 1: The idea for the game.
Revees minot,a fence who was gamble in Germany he asked tom to discover the killing of the two mafias so the police will catch them and that may remove his competition with them.
At first tom has refused to help him but when Reeves suggests getting a respectable person to commit the murders, Tom begins to think about Jonathan who was verry hard to him when they met at a party and who has learned the suffering from leukemia.

Chapter 2: The game begins.
Jonathan receives a letter from Alan a English friend shows that his condition is getting bad so he visits his doctor who told him the there is no change that he has told to alan. Jonathan knows from alan that the news about his health had come from Pierre, a dealer in art materials. Gauthier gives Jonathan a strange description of the person who had told him and claims not to remember the man’s details. Jonathan is more disturbed when Perrier tells him that he cannot guarantee his continued good health. In fact Tom Ripley had started the rumor as a cruel game in return for Jonathan’srudeness. Ripley now decides to take the game a stage further by putting Reeves in touch with Jonathan.
Chapter 3: Jonathan receives an offer.
Jonathan meets with Reeves, who posing under the name of Stephen Wister suggests that because of his failing health and for payment of $96,000 Jonathan might be willing to do the murders. Jonathan is outraged and refuses. But he begins to believe that Perrier may be shielding him from the truth about his illness,and he requests another blood test. The results show only a slight deterioration, but he is now considering the need to leave his wife and son with some money if he should die, and when Wister/Reeves contacts him again, offering him the chance of a second opinion from a German doctor, he decides to go to Hamburg.
Chapter 4: Murder in hamburg.
In Hamburg, Jonathan visits a specialist and undergoes medical tests. Reeves continues to brief him about the first killing although Jonathan has made it clear that he is unwilling to do it. The test results are the same as those he has had in France, but thinking about his wife and son, he lets himself be talked into doing the killing. Using an Italian gun. he shoots a mafia in the back and melts into the subway crowd. Reeves only gives him a small amount of money…
Chapter 5: Tom goes to Fontainebleau.
Reeves meets Jonathan in Paris and gives one third of the money, together with confirmation that the Swiss account has been opened in his name. He tells Jonathan about the second job, killing another mafia in the munich paris , but this time using a garotte. Jonathan refuses. Tom Ripley is amazed to discover that Jonathan has committed the first murder, but doubts whether he will be able to carry out the second one. He takes one of his wife’s paintings to Jonathan’s shop for framing so that he can learn more about him. After this meeting Tom tells Reeves that he thinks Jonathan can be persuaded to kill again and suggests offering him a gun as an alternative to the garotte.
Chapter 6: On the train.
Jonathan accepts an invitation from Reeves to see another specialist in Munich. Again, the doctor finds no change, but Jonathan is persuaded to do the second killing. Given a gun as well as a garotte, he plans to shoot Marcangelo and then himself. On the train, Tom appears. Feeling responsible for getting Jonathan into this situation
he has decided to help him. He takes the garotte and kills Marcangelo, and together, he and Jonathan knock out one of the Italian’s bodyguards and throw both bodies off the train.

Chapter 7: the mafia’s revenge.
Tom meets Jonathan who is surprised to discover that Tom does not want a share of the money. Tom admits that it was he who started the rumor about Jonathan’s health and gave his name to Reeves. They have learned from news reports that the bodyguard is not dead, but Tom doesn’t think they can be traced. Reeves
calls Tom from Amsterdam to tell him that his Hamburg
apartment has been bombed and that his associate has disappeared.
Chapter 8: suspicious death.
Simone is worried about Jonathan and highly suspicious of Ripley. Wanting to find out more, she visits Gauthier, who still won’t reveal the source of the rumor about her husband’s health. Her suspicions increase when Gauthier is killed by a hit-and-run driver. Reeves calls Tom again to tell him that the members of the Mafia have
tortured Fritz, but he has not given them any information. Jonathan collapses and Simone finds his Swiss bank book. She doesn’t believe that he could have been paid such a large sum just for taking part in drug trials.
Chapter 9: a stranger calls.
Jonathan asks Tom for advice on how to allay Simones suspicions. Tom suggests telling her that the doctors have bet on Jonathan’s life expectancy. After a couple of telephone calls wrong numbers, Tom realizes that the Mafia have tracked him down. He sends his wife and their housekeeper out of the house, and decides to accept Jonathans offer of help.
Chapter 10: Tom and jonathan prepare.
Simone doesn’t believe the story about a bet between doctors and she thinks that Jonathan is holding stolen money for Tom. Tom is expecting a visit from the Mafia and asks Jonathan to help him. Jonathan agrees to
go to Toms house, and when Simone calls, looking for her husband, Tom denies that he is there
Chapter 11: The attack.
One of Marcangelo’s bodyguards Angy,appears at Tom’s house. With Jonathan’s help, Tom kills
him, and when the other bodyguard comes looking for Angy, they force him to call his boss in Milan and tell him
that Tom is not the man from the train. Then Tom kills him, too. Before they have a chance to remove the bodies,
Simone appears, looking for her husband. Tom tells her that the dead men had tried to break into the house and
surreptitiously drops a couple of sleeping pills into her drink. Jonathan persuades her to go home.
Chapter 12: the end of a marriage?
Tom needs Jonathan’s help to dispose of the bodies. He decides on a quiet place about three hours drive away, where they burn the Italians’ car with the bodies in it. When they get back, exhausted, Jonathan collapses again, and Tom takes him to a hospital. Tom tells Simone that Jonathan had just been an innocent witness to the murder on the train, but she doesn’t believe this story. Jonathan is released from the hospital and meets
with Tom, who offers to help convince Simone that the situation is safer now. The only risk may be that the Mafia
have caught Reeves and he has told them everything.
Chapter 13: an unexpected hero.
At the Trevannys’ house, Tom is trying to placate Simone, when a stranger appears at the door. Ignoring a warning from Tom, Simone admits the caller. When she reappears sliding on her heels, with a man’s hand over her mouth, Tom hits him on the back of the head with a hammer. Then, using the hammer again, he saves Jonathan from being garotted by a second intruder. Tom and Jonathan go out of the house and walk towards the Italians’ car. Reeves is thrown out of the car, and Jonathan moves in front of Tom just as a shot is fired from
the car. Jonathan is hit and is dead by the time they get him to the hospital. Reeves tells Tom that he had given the Mafia Jonathan’s name, but not Toms.
Chapter 14: The final meeting.
Tom takes Reeves to the airport to catch a plane to Zurich. He realizes that Simone, wanting to protect her husband’s honor and the money has not told the police anything. Some weeks later, he encounters Simone in the street and she spits at him.
