Many prisoners tried to escape from the Tower of London. Most of them died.
This is a story about a great woman, Lady Nithsdale, who saved her husband
from death in the Tower of London.
In 1715, George I was the King of England. Lord Nithsdale didn’t like the King,
so he fought against* him. The king put Lord Nithsdale in the prison in the
Tower and decided to kill him.
Lady Nithsdale asked King George not to kill her husband. But the King was
cruel. He said, “Tomorrow your husband will die!” Lady Nithsdale was very
sad but she was a strong and brave woman. She wanted to save her husband.
She said, “The King can’t stop me. Nothing can stop me!”
She had a plan. That night, she came to the Tower with two women. They hid
extra clothes under their coats. Lady Nithsdale told the guard they wanted to say
goodbye to Lord Nithsdale, so the guard let them in.
Inside the prison, Lord
Nithsdale put on the extra
women’s clothes and a long
woman’s coat. He put a blond
wig* on his head and painted
his cheeks red. But his face
was still a man’s face. So,
when they walked out of the
Tower, he covered* his face
with his hand and pretended
to cry. The guards didn’t like
to see a lady crying. They
opened the gate and the four
“ladies”walked out! After the
story of Lord Nithsdale’s
escape, many ladies liked to
wear a “Nithsdale”–
a long cout.
