I’m George, I’m living in a poor neighborhood and I quit school when I was 16 years old on an impulse, I didn’t like school because the teachers didn’t respect me and I didn’t like the idea that the teachers tell me what to do. I was ashamed of not having a formal education and I had no money to spend except for a few bucks that were given to me by my older sister Sophie. I spend my day listen to the ball games on the radio and sometimes read magazines or newspaper that Sophie had brought home from the cafeteria. when it got dark I go to the park, thinking of better life and I girl to go with and to be respected.

Once I met Mr.cattanzara who asked me what I was doing during the summer. I respect Mr.cattanzara, he is a change maker. he is different from the other people in the neighborhood , he sit in the street and reading the newspaper from the first page to the last while his wife watching him. when he asked me what I do, I was ashamed to admit that I was not doing anything, so I answered that I was reading  a lot to pick up my education. Mr.cattanzara spread the rumour that I was reading and I felt approval wherever I went. people smiled at me and respected me. my sister even gave me an allowance of a dollar a week, I felt elated.

once I met Mr.cattanzara while he was drunk, hedidnt control himself, he implied that he knew that I wasn’t reading at all. he challenged me, treating me like a small child, and he warned me to not make mistake. it seems that he referred to his not having completed his formal education. I felt down, the neighborhood didn’t seen as good as it had seemed before, I was afraid so I locked myself in my room. I was embarrassed confused. the summer was hot and my room was stifling. I felt so hot.

one day , not being able to stand the heat, I left my room. the reaction of the public was astonishing. they whispered that I had already finished  reading the one hundred books, now I realized how much I need respected, so I went to the library and started reading.
