The Normans, of Viking descent, who had been residents of France (Normandy) ended up conquered not only much of the UK (William the Conqueror), but also parts of Europe. Part of their success was blending in with the peoples and cultures that they had won over.

Many of the words we use in English today owe their origins to Norman French, such as ‘conceive, maternal, paternal, etc.
