Irena was born on 15 feburary 1910 in Warsaw to a catholic family. Her father was a medical doctor so we assume they were a wealthy family. In Warsaw, Sendler became a social worker. When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, Sendler and her colleagues also used the canteens to provide, medicine, clothing and other stuff to help the Jewis population. In 1940, the Nazis forced Warsaw’s a lot of Jewish residents into a small getto area. As a result, thousands of them died from disease and starvation. As a social worker, Sendler was able to enter the ghetto to help them and joined Zegota, the Council to Aid Jews. Putting themself at great risk, she and about two dozen of her colleagues set out to save as many Jewish children as possible from death ghetto or deportation to concentration camps. Zegota began by saving Jewish orphans amd they smuggled them out of the ghetto in several ways. On October 20, 1943, the Nazis arrested Sendler and sent her to Pawiak prison. They totured her there but Zegota members bribed the guards and released her in 1944. To conclude, Sendler saves the lives of about 400 Jewish Children and in favor of that, in 1965, she got named as Righteous Among the Nations for her life work which was saving Jewish children from their deaths.
