Dad, I don’t want  to play Upward!” I argued.

“I’m not letting you quit before the league even starts!” my Dad said angrily through the phone.

Basically, what’s happening here is I asked here is I asked my Mom if I could try out for the travel basketball team, and she didn’t understand, so she signed me up for Upward, a church rec league, which I hated.

“Ok, fine, Dad.” I said, giving in.

“Finally.” Dad said, relieved.”You are not allowed to quit.”

I was grumpy during the first practice, and my attitude towards Upward stayed that way for awhile. Then my first game came.

To introduce each team, they would inflate a tube-like hallway in front of a door and set up smoke screens at the front , and you would run to your team when they called your name on the speaker. I would always get nervous because I wouldn’t know who to look at, or what to look at, and by the time they called your name, you would just blindly sprint to your team.

On my first game, when they called my name I was a little angry. I was angry at the guy who was calling the names. You’ll find out why in a couple seconds.

“And now, introducing Patrick MAUER!”

“It’s Maurer.” I said to myself, grinning as I ran out on to the court. The coach began picking the starting lineup.

“Hey, you, you’re in first!” coach said to me.

I was shocked. I had never started before! I was also extremely  nervous. Then, at the jump ball, some other kid on my team got the ball, and he looked more nervous than me! So I called for the ball, and when he passed the ball I realized I had no idea what to do either! Then I just started dribbling, and bam! I had an open jumpshot! I took it, and it sailed into the net! A lot of other kids scored, and I scored alot too! I had so much fun! This league started my love for basketball. We even won the championship! I am still happy my Dad didn’t let me quit
