In this time of viral uncertainty, we are resorting more and more to a technology that has been around a long time – video conferencing. Now that we are doing it from the safety and comfort of our own homes, a few tips that might come in handy.
The camera is not shooting you from screen (where you are looking now). For best results, look one-third down the screen.
The audio on your laptop or smartphone is good enough, as long as you are nearby. For best results, talk in an environment that minimizes external sounds, and sounds bouncing around (for example in a large room with bare walls). I place a few pillows behind and around to muffle the echos.
The video of your mobile or laptop should also be fine. Just remember that the light has to be on your face, not coming from behind. When you broadcast in daytime with a window in the background, your face is barely visible. Make sure that there is more on you than the surroundings (especially as compared to the light coming behind you).
Unless you are using a green screen or virtual backdrop, make sure that your surroundings are uncluttered so that the focus will be on you. The background should be an expression of you, so if you are an erudite person, your library would be a great background (unless it’s terribly messy).
Dress appropriately. If it’s a professional or business conversation, then be sure to groom yourself as well as you can and wear proper attire. Don’t show up unshaven in pyjamas.
Warmth is infectious, even over the internet. Be sure to smile a lot and show empathy.
Keep your video on so that you can be seen to be paying attention. And pay attention!!!! Listening intently is the most important part of communication. Show the person on the other end of the line that you are attentive.
