What is Poetry?
Can anyone name some different kinds of Poetry?

Poetry is a form of literary work in which writers award a special intensity to expressions of feelings.
Even though poetry has many different forms, most poems include distinctive styles and rhythms.
What is a Haiku?
A Japanese lyric verse form that has 3 unrhymed lines and usually pertains to nature.
How is Haiku poetry different from regular poetry?

What things do you notice about those sample Haikus?
Is anything significant about their structure?
Haikus follow the same pattern
They consist of 3 lines
1st Line: 5 syllables
2nd Line: 7 syllables
3rd Line: 5 syllables
Here’s an example:
The water is blue, (5)
Turtles and fish swim freely, (7) I wish I was them. (5)
You try to make your own Haiku now!
Remember it has to be 3 lines and follow the 575 syllable rule!
Don’t forget to punctuate correctly!

Follow Up Activities:
Everyone write a Haiku and share it with the person next to them. You must count each syllable and line to make sure it meets the requirements to be a Haiku. When you’re done with that be sure to give feedback to your partner on your favorite things about their Haikus!
