INTRODUCTION by Joy Grodinsky

Throughout history, there have been people who have influenced the way we live.  Adi Altschuler is one of these people.

I chose to prepare this research project on Adi Altschuler for several reasons.  To begin with, she did a lot for Israeli society such as giving needy people a home. Also, she took part in the Independence Day ceremony of Israel by lighting a torch.

There are a number of things that I already know about Adi Altschuler.  Firstly, I know that she is the founder of  “Krembo Wings”.  In addition, I know that she has done a lot for the community though she is young.

Biography- Adi Altschuler

Adi Altschuler was born on November 23rd ,1986 and raised in Hod Hasharon. She is an educator, leader and social entrepreneur. She is Founder of the “Krembo Wings” youth movement for young people with and without special needs. At the age of 12 she started volunteering at ILAN, an Israeli association for children with physical disabilities. During her volunteering she became a personal tutor for Kobi Kfir – a three-year-old child with cerebral palsy. Through this friendship with Kfir she was exposed to the world of special education.

6

In 2002, when Adi was 16, she joined LEAD, an organization for the development of young leadership, and inspired by the connection with Kfir and his family, and the support from Kobi’s mother, she decided to establish a new youth movement in Israel: “krembo wings”- Israel’s first and only movement for youth both with and without special needs, where they can work together.

Adi presided as CEO and chairman until 2009 and later as president until her retirement in 2014.

7

Adi founded the “Memory in the Living Room” project in 2010 together with her husband, Nadav Ambon This initiative enables private individuals an alternative way of commemorating the Holocaust memorial day through independent meetings to the community in their own living room. In this intimate gathering the participants host Holocaust survivors, listen to their stories, reconnect it to a memory of the Holocaust and examine themselves in society today through meaningful open conversations. Moreover, Altschuler led the Google Education Organization in Israel.

In 2017 Adi, together with a team of educators, teachers, parents and students founded “Inculu-special for everyone”- Inclu is a nonprofit organization. Inculu’s aim is to promote inclusive education in Israel’s public schools.

8

In September 2018, four schools that integrated regular students with studends with special needs. were opened by the Ministry of Education.Adi is married Nadav Ambon and they have two boys and they live in Tel Aviv.

My Figure’s Influence

The establishment of Krembo Wings is what inspires me. The idea of establishing a place that provides a solution for every person wherever he is and also for children with disabilities where they can express their abilities. The inspiration is actually that Adi thought about how to contribute to the community and do good to people and I think that is the most beautiful and good thing that can be done, anyone can do. “Dont let anyone trim your wings” A.Altsuler. This sentence inspires me because it says that we can make all our dreams come true and follow after our objectives and don’t let anyone Interfere with the way to fulfill and it says that we can do everything that we want, the only thing we need is desire and motivation.

INTERVIEW-Adi Altsuler

I chose to interview Adi Altsuler. She is the founder of “krembo wings”, which is a youth for young people with and without special needs. She is the founder of the “Memory in the Living Room” project and “Inclu – Special for All”,which is a nonprofit that promotes inclusive education in Israel through a network of public inclusive schools. Moreover, she managed “Google for Education”, Google’s education organization. There are several reasons why I chose to interview this person. First of all, she has made such an influence on our society. Moreover ,I have the opportunity to interview the subject of my project so I can hear from her how she got to where she is today and what she went through for it.

12

Q- When did you know you would engage in education?

A- I don’t think there was such a stage, I think it happened more by itself without putting it to me as a goal. This is the kind of thing that happens without us planning.

Q- Is this what you dreamed of being when you grew?

A- No, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, and even today I do not know what I want to be when I grow up.

Q- Maybe you will be the Minister of Education?

A- Don’t know, maybe, it is not something that I want or aim for, it’s not my dream but it is impossible to know.

13

Q- Where do you see yourself in another 10 years?

A- Continuing to do what I love and doing things related to education ,do things related to education.

Q- What characteristic is needed in order to be a person that “breaks boundaries”?

A- Don’t ask for permission-impudence. Be in an attitude not to ask permission. If we are in favor of changing something then get up and do it. If I had waited until the Ministry of Education  authorized the youth movement. would be a youth movement, it probably would not have been the “krembo wings” today.

Q- Tell us about the success of a trainee in the “crembo wings” project

A- There are many stories, it’s hard for me to choose one, I think the very fact that everyone expresses themselves there is a success in itself.

Q- Regarding the memorial project in the living room, how do you make the subject of the Holocaust accessible to teenagers and children?

A- For us, a “living room memory” is not only about survivors. There are also second and third generation survivors, children of survivors and grandchildren of survivors. Also, there are recordings of people” but the main thing is the discourse, the memory doesn’t depend on the people who physically experienced it as long as there are other ways to make it accessible

15

Q- Did you experience failures along the way and how did you cope?

A- Many times, all the time. I do not know if there are failures, but it is clear that there are moments that are more difficult. I don’t perceive this as a failure, it could be that someone does not agree with me or does not trust me. I believe that what needs to happen happens so that if there is a difficulty in the way it is meant for a good cause.

In recent years I have been trying to look myself in the eyes of a girl, who still does not know what the concept of failure is, who does not perceive difficult moments as failure. In addition, I think failure is a silly concept of the education system

16

Q- Did you have a mentor who was an inspiration to you?

A- Full of mentors, every period I have a mentor with me, someone I look up to and take inspiration from, who makes me look different and helps me and guides me. My mother is a very good and professional mentor, she helps me a lot and my brother is also a mentor for me.

Q- Do you have any more dreams you want to fulfill?

A- It does not work for me like that. I have many more dreams, in the end it’s running long distances it’s mostly years of work and it’s going to take me a few more years to say I’m fulfilling my dreams.

REFELECTIVE WRITING

I found the preparation of this project worthwhile for several reasons. Firstly, I think the project is very helpful to us both because I practice more English and also because it will help me improve my English in the end because I will learn more vocabulary. At the end, I learn more vocabulary and the English improves. Second, preparing the project was worthwhile because I got to do research on an amazing person and learn how she achieved what she achieved. I learned many things while working on the project.

29

I learned more about Adi, the path she took to get to where she is today and I learned how to work efficiently to meet deadlines and not be under time pressure.  Moreover, I  learned how to seriously research Adi in order to get the most important information for the project and of course the vocabulary that has expanded following the project.

I developed a number of skills during my work on this project. I improved my computer skills when I had to prepare a timeline of Adi’s life, a Kahoot’s game an a power point presentation. I also improved my typing skills in English since I had to type the whole project. Moreover, I learned how to prepare a digital book using Ourbook and as a result, my project is now a digital book which can be found on the internet.

I enjoyed working alone for a number of reasons. First, I wasn’t dependent on anyone, the project was done exactly as I wanted and I had no dilemmas regarding the content and the design. Second, I didn’t have to consider the times of others who might be less comfortable for me, I did the project whenever I was comfortable and knew when to do it so that it wouldn’t conflict with other things. In addition I did everything alone so I got the grade following serious work and investment.

On the one hand, there were things I enjoyed while preparing this project. First of all, I enjoyed doing research and reading about Adi’s life. Also, I enjoyed learning about Adi’s accomplishments because it made me think of so many things about life itself.

31

On the other hand, there were things I enjoyed less while preparing this project. Firstly, didn’t enjoy summarizing her biography into two pages.  In addition, I didn’t enjoy preparing the timeline of her life because it took so much time to do.

In conclusion, I am grateful that I had the opportunity to prepare this project on Adi Altshuler.  I learned so much about an amazing person, her life and her achievements.
