Is It Alive! (SKL1.a, b)

All animals need food to live and grow!

Plants need water and light to live and grow!

Animals can move around, but plants

cannot. For example the puppy on one of the previous pages

can run and walk and dance around but the potted plant can

not move at all even though it is alive too!

Living things can survive only where their needs are met. For

example and animal that needs to stay really warm and dry,

and breathe in fresh air couldn’t live in the bottom of the ocean.

Nor could an ocean animal who needs the cool water to breathe

survive in the ocean.

There are many different kinds of

living things in any area, and they exist

in different places on land and in

water. Just like in the charts some animals like desert animals

can live in hot and dry conditions while others like the ocean

animals have to live in the cool water. There are many other

places animals can live like rainforests, mountains, snowy

areas. It just depends on how much water, and what type of

food, they need to survive! The same goes for plants but

while the sun plays an important role for animals it plays a

huge role for plants so how much sun a plant needs to live

also determines where the plants will live!

Now to apply what we have learned. If living things need food,

water, and sunlight to survive which would be a living

thing..an old sneaker hiding under your bed?… No because it

definitely does not need water, sun, or food to survive or your

shoes wouldn’t be allowed under your bed…what about a

bear?…Yes! Bears need to be able to eat food, and drink

water to survive! But what about a flower? Yes! Think about it

this way if you picked a flower and laid it by your bed in your

room in a sort amount of time it would shrivel. That is

because without the sunlight, water, and food it gets from the

environment outside it could not survive.
