In 1958, King joined a doo-wop group called the Five Crowns, which later replaced the members of the Drifters’.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see

No, I won’t be afraid
Oh, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

[Chorus]
So darlin’, darlin’, stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand
Stand by me, stand by me

[Verse 2]
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry
No, I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

[Chorus]
And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Woah, stand now
Stand by me, stand by me

The chords

“Stand By Me” features a very popular and basic chord progression, which can be heard in many songs throughout the history and even in classical music. One recent example is the song “Zahav” by the Israelis Static & Ben-El. It is clearly inspired by the 50’s-60’s, so we can assume that choosing this progression, with the intent of the song being successful, was not by chance.

The chord progression:

I (2 bars) > vi (2 bars) > IV (1 bar) > V (1 bar) > I (2 bars)

*Lowercase letters for minor chords

The popularity of the song eventually caused this chord progression to also be known as the “Stand By Me progression”.

In “Stand By Me” the progression is strongly highlighted by the Bass, which outlines the changes by playing mainly the root note of each chord plus a few passing tones. The signature bassline and its catchy rhythm is also one of the main reasons for the song’s success.
