“This Will Be Our Year” is the ninth track from the acclaimed album “Odessey and Oracle”by English rock band the Zombies, released in 1968.

It was also released as a single in the US in June 1968, with “This Will Be Our Year” as A side.

The song became a wedding staple and TV soundtrack producers are giving it prominent placement in both Mad Men and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel episodes.

Just a bit about the zombies before we dive in:

The Zombies are an English rock band formed in 1960 in St Albans and led by keyboardist and vocalist Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone.

Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is ranked number 100 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. (our song album)

The Zombies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

“This Will Be Our Year” leans heavily on the strength of its refrain. The song meant a lot for people getting set to celebrate something new from simply celebrating a new year, to those who are getting set to embark upon a new life as a married couple.

It’s one thing to say, “This will be our year.” but it’s the second part of the line that gives the first so much weight: “took a long time to come.” that made the song so relatable. In fact, White told People in 2017 about how the song continues to be a wedding staple. “I’ve actually sung it at my son’s wedding, and at my wife’s sister’s wedding as they walked down the aisle,” White said. “We met Graham Nash at the Hall of Fame, and he said his girlfriend wants ‘This Will Be Our Year’ played at his wedding—and not one of his songs! He was lovely about that.”

About the album:

Odessey and Oracle is the second studio album by English rock band the Zombies. It was originally released in the UK in April 1968 by CBS Records.

The album was recorded between June and August 1967. The sessions took place at Abbey Road Studios and Olympic Studios in London.

This album generally categorized as a psych-pop treasure, but despite what its cover art and legacy suggest, its complex arrangements and baroque instrumentation- much like The Kinks’ Village Green Preservation Society- were idealized harbingers of today’s indie pop.
