Life’s refugees in the camp
For around 40% of the forcibly displaced people,
the camps constitute a place of first refuge. These camps sometimes only exist for a few months, while other situations linger for decades – such as the Tindouf camps in Algeria or Dadaab and Kakuma in Kenya, where refugees have lived for generations. Upon arrival in a camp, refugees are first registered and given an identity card.
Depending on the size of the family, basic services also include the provision of tents, blankets, mattresses, plastic sheeting, cooking utensils and water cans as well as food ration cards.
All of this relief equipment can be made available
within 72 hours by UNHCR, which delivers on average
between 70,000 and 100,000 tents and nearly 2 million m²
of plastic sheeting per year.
