The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a French musical romantic-drama film released in 1964.
The film was written and directed by Jacques Demy, with music and lyrics made by Michel Legrand.
The film’s dialogue is entirely sung through like some operas and stage musicals.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg won the Palme d’or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Foreign-Film.
It was later adapted to an English-language stage musical.
Fun Fact:
Director Damien Chazelle has mentioned that this is one of his favorite films and even had a major influence on the musical La La Land (2016) which was directed by him.
