Note: As in other countries, there was an ‘evolution and revolution’ of popular music in Israel in the sixties.

Because of events here, and the time it took for new songs and styles to reach our shores and catch on, we ‘need’ to extend the ‘Israeli sixties’ to include some songs that were actually released in the early 1970s.

Elements to discuss

-Popular songs as part of the reinvention of the new culture of the Jewish people

-The reliance on meaningful lyrics (poems, bible) and generally avoiding the ‘frivolous’ themes

-Government control and filters- radio, artists from abroad, censorship, contests

-Search of norms and convergence rather than controversy

-Military army bands and radio station, national radio and tv from the end of the sixties

But Change was inevitable: Specific persona of change- Shmulik Kraus, Arik Einstein, Shalom Hanoch, Meir Ariel, Dani Litani, Danny Sanderson

Disruption came from:

record parties, private musical get-togethers (‘chaflot’), foreign radio and media, movies, musicals and musical theatre, live performances, nightclubs

אריק איינשטיין

היה חבר בלהקות הנח”ל, בצל ירוק, שלישיית גשר הירקון והחלונות הגבוהים, וחלק מחבורת לול. שיתוף הפעולה שלו עם שלום חנוך ולהקת הצ’רצ’ילים הניב את אלבומי הרוק הראשונים בישראל.

שיתוף הפעולה של הלהקה עם אריק איינשטיין הביא אותה להכרה בקרב הציבור הרחב בישראל ותרמה תרומה חשובה ליצירת הרוק הישראלי. שיתוף הפעולה הזה החל כשהצ’רצ’ילים ליוו את איינשטיין בהופעותיו, ולאחר מכן שיתפו פעולה בנגינה ובהפקת אלבומיו של איינשטיין “פוזי“, “שבלול“, “פלסטלינה“, “שירי ילדים“, “בדשא אצל אביגדור” ו”יסמין“, שנחשבים על ידי רבים כתקליטי הרוק הראשונים בעברית. איינשטיין ביצע גם גרסאות עבריות לכמה משירי הלהקה, כמו השיר “אחינועם לא יודעת” (מילים: יהונתן גפן) שהוא גרסה לשיר “When You’re Gone”, שכתב גיטריסט הלהקה, רוב האקסלי.
