Introduction:

Looking back to the past, I remember how difficult and challenging this year was.  laughs, tears, and new experiences were concluded. I have learned the meaning and value of being a teacher this year, to touch my students closely, their needs، and to do what is best for them. In this course, I learned modern skills and methods in dealing with my students, the best methods to motivate them, and carefully selecting materials for them. I made them depend on themselves and their abilities. In addition, I succeeded in being a good teacher, yes، I succeeded in positively affecting them and getting their love, which for me was like a light in the middle of the darkness of the path.

  • Which lectures do you think were particularly helpful?
  • The best lectures that contributed to the performance of my duty as a teacher this year were lesson planning: In these lectures, which we spent a great deal of time explaining, I learned the best skills to build a successful and clear lesson that fits the needs and capabilities of my students.  Begin with the Can-do statement, which is the most important in each session to make the perfect progress for my students. The Can-do statement of the lesson focuses on all the materials, methods, and techniques used in the lessons. It focuses on what the student gains at the end of each lesson.

As an introduction, we learned ways to draw the students’ attention and make them effective learners in the lesson, and to prepare the materials in an entertaining way such as using games, pictures, and videos.

The core of the lesson contains the material that we want to teach smoothly and understandably to the students. With repetition to ensure that the students understand the materials to be passed as stories, vocabulary, and grammar. The conclusion of the lesson is to review the lesson shortly and give the students an assessment, worksheet, or activity to do individually, in pairs, or in groups.

Reflection on my lessons and other teachers’ lessons was one of the best and most important lectures this year. Which helped me a lot in my training as a teacher. In this lecture, I learned how to reflect on my teaching and methods as a teacher, to learn from my mistakes, and to know my strengths and weaknesses, especially when the teacher gives me feedback after each one.   This is how I plan better for my next lessons, focusing on materials, methods, and time more precisely.

As well as observing and reflecting on other teachers or colleagues of mine and learning from them and their methods, experiences, and skills in dealing with students. Each teacher has his own touches that distinguish him from others. This gave me greater motivation and skills in my training.

In every lesson I was watching, I would take with me a skill or advice for my next lessons, or even in my personality as a teacher. For example, I learned patience and persistence from other teachers. From my colleague Lina, I learned, for example, how to be smooth and encourage students to participate and interact, even if they are reluctant. From my collaborating teacher, I learned how to deal with different types of students. From other teachers, I learned how to conduct lessons that I was asked to teach suddenly without planning, how to resolve conflicts between students, and teach them private lessons, all of which are skills I gained from reflecting on other teachers and reflecting on my lessons.

Teaching writing strategies was also one of the most useful lectures for me. As a student, I always find writing complicated, hate doing written duties, and find it tiring. I was always at a loss as to how I could love and teach my students a skill that I avoided until this lecture, which discussed every detail about the topic and how to find it with simple and smooth steps for students. Writing is one of the most difficult skills in any language, especially for my students as a third language. In addition, in every ministerial or school exam, there is a section with a high mark for the writing section. In the lecture, we learned how to teach writing by thinking about the topic and writing the points that we will discuss and touch upon, not writing everything that comes to our mind, which is the mistake that most of our students make. The second step is the draft, which is a very important step for the success of writing, as it organizes the ideas and becomes the first copy on which the writing of our topic is based. The third step is to carefully examine the content, is it logical and consistent or not? Are the ideas integrated or incomplete and take a reaction from the colleague or teacher to make sure that his writing is logical and correct or not. The last step is: To check the grammar after checking the content, the order of sentences, and punctuation, are the formulas appropriate to the meaning or not? Are the rules clear and true or false? to ensure that the writer is correct and clear grammatically and in terms of content?

Finally, one of the most important lectures was a lecture on teaching reading strategies for students, and the most important point is to give students a reason or motivation to read: reading is like writing, there are steps. Subject students, teach students the vocabulary in the lesson or their matching of meanings together. The teacher should read the first reading to attract students to the lesson and teach them to read and correct the pronunciation of the words, then the students read, and are associated with it. In the last stage, which are activities other than reading, they are often exercises and tests for students’ understanding of the lesson, such as matching sentences, and words, and answering questions. This lecture was useful and entertaining because I worked with a colleague of mine on planning and building a lesson on teaching reading to our students. We chose a text and built on it useful activities before and during reading, as we shared ideas and benefited from this practical experience.

  • What did you find useful in relation to your practical training at school?
  • In general, all the lectures in this course were useful to me theoretically and practically, and they were used in my training as a teacher, and they had the greatest credit for the success of my lessons. They all taught me innovative and useful skills and techniques to teach all materials and skills, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Although, the lectures that benefited me greatly and that I adopted daily in my lessons were lesson planning, reflection, and using L1 in class. Practically these were the basics of every lesson, the lesson planning lecture was the most focused as before each lesson I had to plan a lesson for long hours with the right objective that my students would learn at the end of each lesson.  Reflection was also integral to every training day for myself and my colleagues. Hence, at the end of each lesson or during it, I would write what I had benefited from, techniques and methods I learned, mistakes that I should avoid, and what I look for in each viewing. Using L1 was an excellent lecture because I was hesitant about its use and how much and at what pace. In this lecture, I learned in which cases to use it and the purpose behind it.

  • Is there anything that was not discussed in the lectures, that you would like to study next year?
  • Is there anything that you would like to learn about in more depth next year?
  • In general, we discussed everything this year from the simplest detail to the greatest, from how to plan a lesson to teach the skills in the language, how to deal with all the riotous, calm, interactive students, and how to face and solve sudden situations and conflicts between students and a lot of interesting and useful lectures. Unfortunately, we did not focus on teaching private lessons to students, how should it be, should we plan it like a regular lesson? What are we looking for in these lessons? What leads to the improvement of the student’s level through these lessons? All of these details we did not discuss in a precise and focused manner, which I would like to learn next year.

Next year, I hope to learn more in-depth techniques for attracting students who are unwilling to teach or who are ineffective in class. I want to learn new and useful ways to motivate them to learn and make them effective with me in my lessons as other students.
