Indeed, Paulsens has a rich and illustrious history!
Paulsens Pharmacy has been around for a whole century. This is a history of the individuals and events that have occurred over the years that have contributed to the formation of who we are now.
The building that has always been home to Paulsens Pharmacy was begun being erected in 1912 and did not become fully operational until 1913. Before Nichols Pharmacy moved into the building in 1918, the building housed a real estate business. Nichols Pharmacy moved into the building in 1918. Charles Paulsens, who was employed there as a Pharmacist, purchased the firm in the same year that he changed its name and became its owner. In 1899, Mr. Paulsen made the journey westward from his hometown of Latourell, Kansas. Mr. Paulsen was a tall, friendly man who became a resident favorite in Hollywood almost immediately after moving there. Mr.
After that, Paulsen went on to be one of the co-founders of the Hollywood business association as well as the Jr. Rose Festival Parade, both of which are successful organizations even to this day. The Soda Fountain has historically been the most important component of the Pharmacy. It was assembled in New York before being transported to Portland, Oregon. Soon, people started coming in the morning to read the newspaper while sipping a cup of coffee, and later in the day, youngsters would stop by after school to have a soda or a milkshake. Residents of the Hollywood district have historically flocked to the fountain as a favorite gathering spot in the neighborhood.
In 1946, Mr. Paulsens hired Jim Meade, an additional Pharmacist, to work with the company. Jim is a licensed pharmacist who received his education at Butler University. He was born and raised in the state of Indiana. He enlisted in the Navy during World War 2, and for the remainder of his service, he was stationed in the San Francisco Bay Area. During his time off, he explored the state of Oregon and became enamored with the city of Portland. Following his retirement from the Navy, he relocated to this area. They worked together up until Mr. Paulsen’s retirement in 1968, when he moved to the Portland area to spend his retirement years. Mr. Paulsen passed away on November 26, 1980, at the age of 82. Jim Meade carried on the long-standing custom of providing courteous service and ensured that the soda fountain, the establishment’s primary draw, remained in working order. In the not too distant future, in 1970, Jim hired another pharmacist by the name of Gary Balo. Gary Balo became a Partner in the company in 1978, after the two had worked together for eight years, giving him ownership of half the company.
They were given notice to vacate the premises by the owners of the property on May 15th, 1982. McDonald’s had reached an agreement to acquire the historic building, demolish it, and construct a drive-through restaurant on the site of the former structure. In order to stop the building from being demolished, Mr. Meade and Mr. Balo went to the City of Portland, Grand District, and the Hollywood business association with a proposal for rezoning the area so that it would be considered a “historical site.” This would prevent the building from being demolished. The plan was approved. The phrase “traffic congestion” describes this problem. Because of this, the City of Portland decided to designate the business as a historic landmark, which stopped the eviction process and prevented the construction of a drive-through McDonald’s restaurant. This would not have been achieved without a large number of individuals writing letters, signing petitions, and making phone calls to key persons who were engaged in making the ultimate decision. Because of this, Balo and Meade will be thankful to the community for the rest of their lives.
On December 31, 1987, Jim Meade took his retirement. As of the first of the year 1988, Gary Balo was the sole proprietor of the business. Friendly faces, icy sodas, and, of course, prescription advice and dispensing were all part of the traditional pharmacy experience that Gary and his wife Karen provided for their customers. Gary Balo, who had worked at the Pharmacy for the previous 46 years, eventually made the decision to retire and on April 18, 2016, he sold the Pharmacy to Gary Basrai. Since that time, the Pharmacy has had two separate interior remodels and has expanded into new markets, including as providing dispensing services for hospice patients in the Portland Metropolitan Area. At this time, we have established collaborative relationships with Kaiser Health, Adventist Health, and Serenity Hospice. Our primary priority is about providing excellent service to our customers. Although some of the faces have changed, the fundamental ethical principles have not. Compassion, Accuracy, and Punctuality in Service
