the song – piano man, was written for the 1973 album

of billy joel.

The song is about Billy’s own experience as a piano-lounge singer for six months, that happend after he had to get away from New York due to issues with his record company.  As he needed work to pay the bills, but couldn’t use his well-known name, he worked at the bar as a piano singer, under the name Bill Martin

This song was written from the point of view of a bar piano player, who pays attention to the things that are happening around him ,the atmosphere that occurs while he is doing his work, and most important, the people 

those people are-

An old man, John the bartender, the businessmen, the ‘real estate novelist’, Paul, the waitress, and davy- the us navy sailor

What they all have in common is that they dont feel satisfied in their specific point of life. Everyone has dreams, hopes, and ambitions, and for some of them, being in a bar only makes this situation continue

This is where the role of the pianist comes into play. Slowly, he becomes a bigger part of their lives, and makes them enjoy while he plays ,

“and forget about life for a while….”

Suddenly, the pianist is not only part of the atmosphere,
He is the reason for which they all came

all the characters that are mentioned was real

as biily said in an interview

John was the bartender. Paul was this real estate guy who wanted to write the great American novel and Davey was a guy who was in the Navy. It’s a true story and I knew when I was doing the gig, I said, ‘I gotta get a song out of this’ and it worked out.“
“Even the girl in the song, that says ‘And the waitress is practicing politics, as the businessmen slowly get stoned’ – that was my first wife. She was working there too

There is no doubt that there is alot of meaning behind this song.
Everyone has their own Difficulties and problems in life.
The simple bartender just wants to succeed in life and be a movie star,
The real estate man who succeeded,
Can’t find time for a wife
And the navy man will remain stuck in the navy.

but how do they deal with those things?

well, they dont .

but , they recognise the little things

that makes them happy at the exact moment ,

as they request from the piano man, and say

Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody
And you’ve got us feelin’ alright

this things teach us about life,
There will always be difficulties in life.
We need to know how to enjoy the small pleasures of life

which give us a small break from the path of life, and give us meaning and calmness
