Act III

(The stage is set as the Keller’s living room. Joe Keller is seated in a chair, staring off into space. Chris Keller enters, looking determined)

Chris: Father, we need to talk.

Joe: (not looking at him) What is it, Chris?

Chris: (pauses) The trial starts tomorrow. I know what you did.

Joe: (looks up at him) What are you talking about?

Chris: (angrily) Don’t play dumb, Father. I know you shipped those faulty cylinder heads to the military. I know you caused the deaths of 21 pilots.

Joe: (defensively) I didn’t have a choice, Chris. They were pressuring me to ship them.

Chris: (shakes his head) That’s no excuse. You have to take responsibility for your actions.

Joe: (sighs) You’re right, son. I’ll turn myself in and take the consequences.

(Joe stands up and starts to leave the room)

Chris: (stops him) Wait, Father. There’s something else.

Joe: (turns back) What is it?

Chris: (hesitantly) I have an idea, that might help you make amends for your actions and also help you start a new life.

Joe: (intrigued) Tell me more.

Chris: (explains) You can flee the country and start a new life abroad. You can find solace in the form of community service and volunteer work, dedicating yourself to helping those in need in your new community. You can also use your resources to support the families of the pilots who died.

Joe: (nods) I like the idea, son. I’ll do it.

(Joe exits the stage. Chris stands there for a moment, then exits as well)
