Dear Educators,
This book is a guide to help your first graders understand their emotions and how to help them manage when they may feel more than one emotion at a time.
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify their emotions.
- Students will be able to express their feelings to those around them.
- Students can communicate with their peers about how and why they may feel a certain way.
- Children can identify and explain the meaning of different emotions through facial expressions.

Happy
When you feel happy you enjoy yourself. You are often joyful and content. When you are happy you feel or show the pleasure of contentment. When you are happy you want to share that feeling with others.

Sadness
When you feel sad you show sorrow. Sometimes sadness may appear to be quiet, and sometimes you may cry and feel hurt.
Sometimes when you are sad you cry and it’s okay to cry when talking about your sad feelings.

Afraid
When you feel afraid sometimes you may get frightened. Sometimes you feel alone and not brave enough to face what’s scaring you. You may feel really tiny and not able to speak up.

Angry
When you get angry you may feel like things are unfair, and that others are trying to get me in trouble. When you are angry you may get annoyed easily. When you are angry you don’t want to play or share with others. Sometimes when others get angry they may scream at you.

Calm
When you are calm you feel at peace. You don’t show strong emotions but instead, you feel like everything around you is as easy as breathing in and out.
Discussion questions:
- After listening to the book the color monster what color do you think means happiness? How about Sadness?
- Have you experienced any of these emotions today? Why?
- Have you asked a friend how they felt today?
Students will then complete a take-home worksheet where they draw in the facial expressions of the emotions in the color of their choice.
