Quill is a colourless city where unwanteds are people that will be killed because they did something creative and the wanted will go to university in this place called Quill.

When Alex Stowe arrives at the death farm, he and the other unwanteds see a tortoise and it calls for a man named Marcus who turns the Great Lake of Boiling Oil and the surrounding land into a sprawling mansion with colour all around it. This turns out to be Artime, where the leader is Marcus Today.

They would see many more sights like giant talking animals, colours which Quill was deprived of, but best of all, Marcus Today tells them they are not getting killed and they are being saved.

The unwanteds learn that using art, they can fight and do magic but if they return to Quill, this secret land would be exposed and the Military will destroy them.

Alex meets some people he knew from Quill who are Megan, Samheed and he gets to know his visual arts teacher which is what he specializes in.

Alex learns that once you are very good at what you specialize in, you can go to something called Magical Warrior Training which takes your skills to another level.

Turns out, Mr. Today had been saving kids for a very long time now but the High Priest, who is like a dictator, trusted him as the “death farmer.”

Each person in their own personal room has a blackboard that talks and tells them things but Alex muted his because it became annoying so he didn’t know the governors were coming for a visit so he was walking around a lot so Mr. Today was barely able to cast his spell to hide Artime so it almost got revealed.

It turns out that Mr. Today was scared of doing Magical Warrior training with Alex because he thought Alex would try to find his twin brother with his abilities but he also knew Alex was very gifted and was bound to find a way in the end so he decided to start the training anyways.

Alex starts his first day for Magical Warrior training and progresses very well learning how to cast his first spell.

Mr. Today gathers all the unwanteds he has even saved together for an assembly and tells them that he has a hunch that Quill will find out about Artime soon so they all will be training to fight in groups to prepare for an actual battle.

Alex dreamed about Aaron again but woke up so he went for a walk to clear his mind but soon found the pathway to Mr. Today’s office and decided to take a look but discovered it was blocked with glass.

Alex sees his friend Samheed also at Mr. Today’s office and Samheed tells him that there are live videos of things going on in Quill on a blackboard and if they get lucky, the glass wall won’t but up and they will be able to see Quill.

The next day, Alex goes to check Mr. Today’s office again at lunchtime and this time, the glass wall is down so he goes and checks the videos and sees his brother in one so he thinks that Mr. Today has a video of Aaron because Aaron belongs in Artime remembering that Aaron had also drawn in the sand before with him.

Alex learned about 3D drawings which could take you anywhere, for example if you drew a door of a certain place, you could get there and in this case, Alex worked on drawing Aaron’s door to get to him.

Mr. Today talks with the teachers about Will Blair who is acting suspicious and Alex who they know is trying to get to his brother.

Alex goes to the library in the night to work on his door to get to Aaron but he hears Will Blair talking to Samheed about his plans to kill Aaron using a 3D door and then use magic to look like him to take his spot as a wanted.

Alex works and finishes the door that night and goes to Mr. Today’s office to hang the door up and go to Aaron but Aaron is in disbelief and Alex persuades him to go back to Artime for a chat.

Aaron decides that he is not going to go to Artime and that he should tell the High Priest and Mr. Today knows this.

Aaron who had a meeting that day with the High Priest asks to go to the Great Lake of Boiling Oil for fuel for the military vehicles and she agrees but when they arrive unannounced, they see Artime and the High Priest knows she had been betrayed by Marcus Today.

Mr. Today has a chat with the High Priest and lets her go and then tells all the unwanteds to prepare for battle with the military.

As the battle gets started, Samheed kills the general of the military and many other unwanteds are able to kill or permanently stun other military people but Alex is taken off the battlefield and Mr. Today takes him to the High Priest’s office and tells him that the High Priest was actually his twin and that he betrayed her because she went too far with her ideas.

As the battle is coming to a close, the High Priest confronts Mr. Today while holding his daughter at gunpoint but one of Mr. Today’s creatures fly in and take Claire to safety while Lani, one of Alex’s friends, is invisible and kills the High Priest.

After the battle, Governor Gunnar Haluki who had been Mr. Today’s ally secretly the whole time because the High Priest and the two lands Quill and Artime would live in peace with each other.
