Hot cross buns

Before you pick up your guitar, find yourself a chair and make sure it doesn’t have arms. Once you have your chair, you can sit down and pick up your guitar. Most guitars have a big curved part in the body – you can use the curve to rest the guitar on your leg. Make sure the guitar is close enough to your body that you can reach the neck of the guitar with one hand and your other arm can reach around the body of the guitar to strum.

To hold your guitar, take the hand that you write with and place it in front of the big hole in the middle of the guitar. This is the sound hole; you will strum the strings in front of it and sound will come out of it. You may have to lean and reach over the body of the guitar to reach the sound hole. Now you can place your other hand on the neck of the guitar – the long, skinny part. Your palm will be on the back of the neck and your fingers will press down on the strings in the front to make chords.

For Hot Cross Buns, we start by counting down two frets from the headstock of the guitar and placing your pointer finger on the second string (counting from the bottom up), then you will pluck the second string with the hand in front of the sound hole to play the note. For the next note, since the fret is “0”, you will lift up your pointer finger on the neck of the guitar and then pluck the second string again.  You can keep moving through the tab this way to play the whole song.
