The history of Coronado Island dates back to the early 19th century when the Spanish first explored the area. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that the island was developed as a resort destination, with the construction of the famous Hotel del Coronado.

In 1888, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story purchased the land on which the hotel now sits, envisioning it as a seaside resort that would attract wealthy visitors from around the world. They hired architect James W. Reid to design the hotel, which was completed in 1888 at a cost of $1 million.

The Hotel del Coronado quickly became a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities, presidents, and other notable figures. The hotel’s grand ballroom was the site of many famous events, including the 1905 wedding of Hollywood actress Mary Pickford and actor Owen Moore.

During World War II, the hotel was converted into a Naval Hospital, and many wounded soldiers were treated there. After the war, the hotel was returned to its original purpose as a luxury resort.
