Once upon a time, in the 1930s, a group of farmers in Western Australia were struggling to protect their crops from the destructive emus. They pleaded with the government for help, and so the Australian army was sent in to deal with the problem.
At first, the soldiers thought it would be an easy task, with their machine guns and weapons.
but they soon realized they were up against an elusive and cunning enemy. The emus were difficult to spot and even harder to hit with their weapons.
After these events, the ornithologist Dominic Serbanti commented: “The command of the emo birds undoubtedly ordered guerrilla warfare, and his large army split into a huge number of small units, which caused the military equipment to lose its effectiveness.”

Despite their best efforts, the soldiers were unable to make a significant impact on the emu population. The birds continued to ravage the crops and outsmart the soldiers. The army eventually had to admit defeat and withdraw their troops.
In the years that followed, the government decided to change its approach to give a sum of money to each farmer for the emo birds that he would kill.
The Emu War became a strange footnote in Australian history, an odd example of man’s struggle against nature. But the legacy of the war lives on, reminding us of the futility of trying to control the wild forces of the natural world.

The next time you feel inferior or jealous of the Australians, remember that they lost the war.. against a bird
