Rupi Kaur is a famous poet, illustrator, author, and performer. Rupi Kaur was born in Punjab India in 1992. After 4 years her parents emigrated to Toronto, Canada. Growing up Rupi Kaur shared that she enjoyed reading and seeing how books had the “ability to pull one out of their reality and into someone else’s”. This became a calling she aspired to reach, being able to allow people to read her work and feel a connection to it.

Rupi Kaur attended the University of Waterloo in Ontario where she studied Rhetoric and Professional Writing. In her college years, Rupi began writing, performing, and posting her work on social media.

Rupi was then inspired to publish her work. However, many people doubted her. Saying that poetry never gets published, and would be better if she sold individual poems to magazines, articles, journals, etc. She started with that but was getting constant rejection letters. Later on, the idea of self-publishing came to mind. Where she was also advised to go against it, however, that wasn’t going to stop her. She decided that she would write and illustrate and self-published her first book. In November of 2014 through the use of CreateSpace. Her first book was milk and Honey. Where her family and she first started selling in local stores for years before it rose to fame.

Rupi Kaur most recently released a guided writing journal titled Healing Through Words to help others become vulnerable and find a deep connection within themselves

The reason that I chose Rupi Kaur is because I enjoy writing poetry. Both her books milk and honey, and the sun and her flowers have been an inspiration for my writing but also very heartfelt and comforting to read. Rupi Kaur and I are from completely different backgrounds. However, through her writing, I feel a connection to her. Where she speaks to and advocates for women. Her books tell her story. Where her body has been taken advantage of and how she fought to take it back. In the sun and her flowers, we see a look at her culture and how she is working to break generational curses. Where she learned from her mother that women are meant to be caretakers and should be obedient to men. Rupi Kaur does not blame women or speak down on them. Instead, she builds us up through her words. She sees us as individuals who have fought long and hard to earn a spot in a world that is dominated by men.
