in class we saw a video that explains the formula behind disney songs, and why they are so great!

in this book we will try to see if that formula was also a factor in the song hakuna matata.

first of all we will talk about the story.

in the movie mufasa (simba’s father) just died, and simba thought it was because of him so he ran away in despair. in the song timon and pumbaa teach him to overcome his feelings and to live life to the fullest. because as we know hakuna matata means “no worries”, despite all that happned.

in this song there are 86 uniqe words out of 175 in total.

meaning there is alot of repeating and not much of diversity, which makes that song simple and clear about his purpose.

but is the message of the song even a good one?

the song has 2 main parts,

one verse  and chorus that repeats 3.5 times.

the chorus has a purpose of explaining the phrase and to be “catchy”.

the verse has a uniqe start where pumbaa is singing in a high pitch and a bit of key, and than a change in rhythm in the duet.

and of course the hook:

the ending of the verse which implies about gases :), and makes everyone to laugh.

hakuna matata seems to have some of the disney trademarks, defintly no all of them,and actually doesn’t even have most of them.

it has some uniqe and a bit childish humor and voice changes which makes it loved by children and adults.

overall this song has no interesting musical shifts or uniqe chords, even the singing is a bit of key in times.

so why do people love this song so much?

As we learned in this course whats realy importent is the story of the song.

This song has at least 2 storys that i can think of:

first of all the story of the movie, mufasa died and the audiance is in shock and grief (especially kids but no only), and this song shows us how simba overcome it and continued to go on in life with a smile.

furthemore every person that had a tough experience in life can relate to the song, and find comfort, hope and a smile in it, which makes it an amazing song!
