Elements of a Story

To Educators:

Geared toward 2nd grade

As students begin to read stories and text, the elements of a story become important to know. In this unit, students will revisit some of the terms they learned in 1st grade and learn some that are new as well such as problem, solution, plot and theme.

Includes: Discussion questions, videos to learn terms, and review of terms to see what was learned.

Setting- the time and place of a story.

Plot- the series of events that make up a story.

Characters- people, animals, or creatures in a story.

Problem- a challenge or obstacle in the story.

Solution- the problem is solved, the characters find a way to change, fix, or figure out the problem.

Theme- the main idea or the hidden message a writer explores in a story

Discussion:

Give an example of a story and name each element of the story.

One sunny day, Amelia found a puppy in her backyard. The puppy looked sad and scared. Amelia gently picked him up and said, “Don’t worry I’ll help you find your home!” Amelia asked her friends if they had seen the puppy. Together, they searched to find his home. Finally, they found a little boy who was looking very worried. “That’s my puppy, Max!” he exclaimed. Amelia smiled as she watched them reunite. She loved to help others.
