SHORT HISTORY OF COFFEE

The history of coffee is rich and fascinating, beginning in Ethiopia, where legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi discovered the energizing effects of coffee cherries on his goats. By the 15th century, coffee spread to the Arabian Peninsula, particularly Yemen, where it was brewed and enjoyed in social settings. This led to the emergence of coffeehouses, or qahveh khaneh, in the Ottoman Empire, which became centers for conversation and cultural exchange. In the 17th century, coffee reached Europe, gaining popularity in countries like Italy, France, and England, where coffeehouses opened and were known as “penny universities” for their stimulating discussions. As demand grew, coffee production expanded to colonies in the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia, with Brazil emerging as a major producer. The 20th century saw the introduction of instant coffee and espresso machines, alongside the rise of specialty coffee shops that emphasized quality. Today, coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, enjoyed in countless styles and preparations, reflecting its journey from a local drink to a global phenomenon
