BLUES MUSIC
If we look at the history of Blues music, it is a genre that originated in the African American communities of the Deep South of the United States in the late 19th century. It has its roots in spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and simple narrative ballads. The genre is characterized by its distinctive use of specific chord progressions, most famously the 12-bar blues structure, and expressive melodies that often convey themes of sorrow, hardship, or longing. If we look at the melodies, blues melodies are often based on a “blues scale,” which uses flattened notes, especially the third, fifth, and seventh notes that give the music its distinctively mournful sound. On the other hand, the lyrics usually express feelings of sorrow, pain, or loss but can also cover themes like love, joy, and resilience. These themes are often tied to the African American experience, particularly addressing the struggles with racism, poverty, and injustice.
