I miss Uzi Chitman. He was a talented and unique singer. A gifted songwriter. But beyond everything else, he was a “mensch”, a good human being.

I met Uzi through Miri Dotan (the wife of another departed friend, Dudu Dotan, also an immensely talented writer and performer). I called and went to see him. I must have been nervous (meeting such a famous and prominent musician), but his smile, and common touch were evident from the outset.

After discussing several potential projects, Uzi became interested in a play I was writing, “Bavli Towers”. He invented a persona, “King Egotripper” and began to dream up a musical score to the lyrics I had been writing. We would meet every two weeks or so. In the meantime, we became friends. My children were small and he invited us to attend his performances. We were elated!

Our nascent musical was, alas, not progressing. Uzi had many performances and commitments, and he was taking care of his ailing father. In the end, he had to beg off. He wrote me a beautiful letter, which I still have.

At the very end, he added “…hoping that a day will come when we will be able to work together”. Alas, that day never came. Uzi died suddenly in 2004.

I miss him.
