So, why was The Twist written?
There were a few key reasons:

  1. A New Dance Trend – Hank noticed teenagers twisting their hips in a unique way on the dance floor, and he found it both fun and fascinating.

About The Twist

The Twist was recorded in 1960 with The Midnighters. The following year, it exploded in popularity after being performed on a popular TV show.
Teenagers across America rushed to learn the dance — and soon, it wasn’t just a youth trend. Adults, celebrities, and even political figures joined the craze.

The Twist wasn’t just a fun song — it changed dancing forever.
Before, most dances needed partners to hold hands or dance close. The Twist let people dance apart, moving freely on their own.

This made it feel new, exciting, and full of energy.
It became a dance for everyone such as teenagers, parents, and even famous people, and it still makes people smile today.
