Mr. Know-All

The narrator of the story was going to yakohama to San Francisco. When he was on the ship he had to share a cabin with a stranger and turned out that his name was Max Kelada , which made the narrator look upon it with dismay. He also disliked him from his luggage and his things in the room.

The narrator made his way to the smoking room and called for a pack of cards and strated playing , after that a man came to him , it turned out that it was Mr. Kelada. He kept talking with the narrator for a long time , and he didn’t like it. the narrator was suprised because Mr. Kelada does not look English nor does he behave like an English man. They had a drink together. Mr. Kelada was so chatty and argumentative . He talked to everybody on various topics as if he knew everything better than anybody else. For that reason , he was nicknamed as Mr.Know-All .He was hated by almost everyone on board .

There was another man named Mr.Ramsay who was going to Kobe from New York with his beautiful wife Mrs.Ramsay. One evening they all sat at the doctor’s table .a conversation started between Mr.Know-all and Mr.Ramsay. They argued about pearls ,which was about the cultured pearls . Mr. Kelada claimed that he knew much about pearls .He showed a pearl-chain worn by Mrs. Ramsay and said that it was real and it would cost up to thirty thousand dollars .

But Mr. Ramsay claimed that the pearl chain was artificial and his wife had bought it for just 18 dollars at a deparment store . They bet hundred dollars on it. Mr. kelada took out his magnifying glass and examined the pearl and found out that the pearls were real.  when he wanted to reveal the truth He looked at Mrs. Ramsay and saw that her face was pale and she looked as if she was going to faint. Mr. kelada hide the truth and said that the pearls were artificial.He gave a hundred dollar note to Mr. Ramsay

Next morning, he got his money back from Mrs. Ramsay. but instead of taking the money he tore the develope and asked the narrator to throw it in the trash. the narrator asked Mr. kelada if the pearls were real , Mr. kelada answered :”if i had a pretty wife i shouldn’t let her spend a year in New York while i stayed in Kobe “. Then the narrator understood that Mrs. Ramsay was cheating on her husband all this time. he kept thinking about it all the time and he was confused about what is the right thing to do , after a couple of days the narrator finally found out that the best thing to do is to reveal the truth. He went directly to Mr. Ramsay with no hesitation and told him that his wife was cheating on him. Mr. Ramsay was shocked at the beginning and couldn’t believe that his wife can do such a thing. he ran immediately to Mr. kelada and asked him if it was really true , at this point Mr. kelada knew that he only had to say the truth.

it was hard for Mr. Ramsay to accept that all this time everything she did was just a lie.

At the end he went to see her. when he looked at her he couldn’t just stay angry and yell at her or even hit her right in the face because his love was much more controlling than his anger , he just left her without saying a word while he was still in a shock . but the problem didn’t go away ,rumors started to spread in the ship and everyone knew his wife was a cheater , at the end Mrs. ramsay couldn’t handle it and had to commit suicide.

After a couple of days everyone on the ship knew about Mr. kelada that he is a good man, he was the best example of humanity and everybody loved him and earned the respect of others.
