The postman lived alone in a little shack on the edge of town. Once, he was a proud postman, wearing his blue uniform, delivering letters to all the people in his neighborhood. Everyone wanted to be his friend. Especially when they were waiting for an important letter, a postcard from someone far away or a package from someone they loved. He was so busy that he worked from sunrise to sunset. And sometimes late into the night.

The years passed and fewer and fewer people sent and received letters. The postman delivered only a few letters every day. Somedays he delivered only a single package. And there were days when there was nothing to deliver and he sat at home reading books and watching tv.

Every evening he would order a mushroom pizza from “Mitza La Pizza”. The same delivery man would deliver the pizza. Sometimes they would talk for a minute or two. The postman had plenty of time, but the pizza delivery man was very busy indeed and would soon ride off on his shiny motorcycle. The postman would sit alone and eat his pizza and then go to bed.

One day he heard the bell ring. It was the pizza delivery man, but this time he had two pizza boxes. “Thank you”, said the postman, but it’s just me and I cannot eat more than one pizza.”

5

“I know”, said the delivery man, “but it’s your birthday today. I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday.”

The postman opened the first box. In it was his regular mushroom pizza. He took the second pizza box in his hand. He felt something move. What was it?  He slowly opened the pizza box. Two small eyes were staring at him.

It was a gerbil! A gerbil!! The postman was so happy. Someone had remembered his birthday. And he had a very new friend. The postman named the gerbil Bill and found a lovely new box for him. And what do you think Bill had for dinner every evening? You guessed it. A slice of the Postman’s mushroom pizza.
