Dublin, the capital, is the largest City in the Republic of Ireland. Nearly one thirdof the country’s population live there.

Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland. Dublin is in the province of Leinster of Ireland’s east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey. The city has an urban area population of 1,345,402. The population of the Greater Dublin Area, as of 2016, was 1,904,806 people.

Northern Ireland has no official language, but English is the de facto official language of the United Kingdom and Irish and Ulster-Scots are recognised regional languages.

The Emerald Isle

The climate is mild in Ireland and it rains a lot, especially in the west. The grass grows very green in the warm, wet climate and so Ireland is often called”The Emerald Isle’. Ireland has mild winters and cool summers. The average temperature in January is about 6 C. In July it is about 15 C.

Going to America

In the past, many Irish people left the country, looking for a better life elsewhere. Between 1841 and 1925. over five million people emigrated to the United States, where their lrish-American de- scendants live today.

Religion

Over 90 per cent of the people in the Republic are Roman Catholic Northern Ireland is mainly Protestant.

Although predominantly Roman Catholic, Ireland today is a multi-cultural society where all religions are embraced and respected as playing vital roles in the societal make-up of the country.

The Troubles

The history of the Troubles continue to be dominated by extensive reference to the IRA but this is understandable because the organisation took every opportunity to publicise their political agenda through a constant stream of propaganda and disinformation. Due to this publicity many people tend to forget there were only two republican terrorist organisations, PIRA (the Official IRA was now little more than a name) and the Irish National Liberation Army.

Beautiful scenery

Ireland is famous for its beautiful scenery, especially in the west. The scenery there is a mixture of rugged rocks and cliffs, soft green valleys and quiet bays.

The Giant’s Causeway Kissing the Blarney Stone

Northern Ireland is a beautiful,  green country with lots of lakes,  rivers and mountains.  The most famous sight is the Giant’s Causeway on the north coast. Blarney Castle near the city of Cork is one of the popular tourist attractions that bring visitors and money to Ireland. Legend says that if you kiss a certain stone high up in the tower, will become a good talker.
